REGISTERED
DESIGN PROFESSIONAL.
An individual who
is registered or licensed to practice their respective design
profession as defined by the statutory requirements of the
professional registration laws of the state or jurisdiction
in which the project is to be constructed.
SKYLIGHT,
UNIT. A
factory-assembled, glazed fenestration unit, containing one
panel of glazing material that allows for natural lighting
through an opening in the roof assembly while preserving the
weather-resistant barrier of the roof.
SKYLIGHTS
AND SLOPED GLAZING.
Glass
or other transparent or translucent glazing material installed
at a slope of 15 degrees (0.26 rad) or more from vertical.
Glazing material in skylights, including unit skylights, solariums,
sunrooms, roofs and sloped walls, are included in this definition.
SLEEPING UNIT.
A room or space in
which people sleep, which can also include permanent provisions
for living, eating, and either sanitation or kitchen facilities
but not both. Such rooms and spaces that are also part of
a dwelling unit are not sleeping units.
STORY.
That
portion of a building included between the upper surface of
a floor and the upper surface of the floor or roof next above
(also see Mezzanine and Section 502.1). It is
measured as the vertical distance from top to top of two successive
tiers of beams or finished floor surfaces and, for the topmost
story, from the top of the floor finish to the top of the
ceiling joists or, where there is not a ceiling, to the top
of the roof rafters.
STORY ABOVE
GRADE PLANE. Any
story having its finished floor surface entirely above grade
plane, except that a basement shall be considered as a story
above grade plane where the finished surface of the floor
above the basement is:
1. More than
6 feet (1829 mm) above grade plane; or
2. More than
12 feet (3658 mm) above the finished ground level at any
point.
TOWNHOUSE.
A single-family dwelling
unit constructed in a group of three or more attached units
in which each unit extends from the foundation to roof and
with open space on at least two sides.
VAPOR-PERMEABLE
MEMBRANE. A
material or covering having a permeance rating of 5 perms
(52.9X10-10 kg/Pa .s. m2) or greater,
when tested in accordance with the dessicant method using
Procedure A of ASTM E 96. A vapor-permeable material permits
the passage of moisture vapor.
VAPOR RETARDER.
A vapor-resistant
material, membrane or covering such as foil, plastic sheeting
or insulation facing having a permeance rating of 1 perm (5.7X10-11
kg/Pa .s. m2) or less, when tested in accordance
with the dessicant method using Procedure A of ASTM E 96.
Vapor retarders limit the amount of moisture vapor that passes
through a material or wall assembly.
WALL, LOAD-BEARING.
Any wall meeting
either of the following classifications:
1. Any metal
or wood stud wall that supports more than 100 pounds per
linear foot (1459 N/m) of vertical load in addition to its
own weight.
2. Any masonry
or concrete wall that supports more than 200 pounds per
linear foot (2919 N/m) of vertical load in addition to its
own weight.
WALL, NONLOAD-BEARING.
Any wall that is
not a load-bearing wall.
YARD.
An
open space, other than a court, unobstructed from the ground
to the sky, except where specifically provided by this code,
on the lot on which a building is situated.
