Sanitation. A hygienic disposal or recycling of waste, as well as the policy and practice of protecting health through hygienic measures. The term sanitation is sometimes understood in a narrow sense as the collection and treatment of wastewater. In a somewhat broader sense the term also includes on-site sanitation, for example through septic tanks and latrines. In the broadest sense of the term, sanitation also includes the collection and disposal of municipal solid waste (see below). In addition, the term sanitation is also used in the food industry as the adequate treatment of food-surface areas
